Hindi - HuMRi RaSTra BhaSa

I came face-to-face with my ex (if you can call her that - if she qualifies for that title by virtue of her "going out" with me for a few weeks), today. In fact, we crossed twice and not for a moment was there any discomfort.

This lady hails from a Northern region of India, where a very peculiar version of Hindi is spoken. It is characterized by several corruptions of the Delhi/UP version of Hindi, in, most notably, "ka" instead of "kya", the sound "s" instead of "sh", and so on. This version of Hindi is often depicted in movies and in parodies about some well known politicians from the region. I'd say, Ajay Devgan, Juhi Chawla, and of course, Rekha, have very convincingly spoken this dialect in various movies.

Just came to know from wikipedia that this dialect is even spoken in Suriname, which has a substantial ethnic North Indian population.

One of these days I'm going to walk over to my ex and ask her, "tumri saadi kisi neta/IASwale ke saath fixed hui, ka?"

********
I did not intend to sound racist/ethnocentric, I am none of these things. Its just that whenever I see my ex-, I picture Juhi Chawla's character in the film 'Amdhani-Athhani Kharcha Rupaiya'.
